The best way to network is to attend events but… if you attend and don’t get involved with the members, you are missing out on valuable opportunities.
Most people who attend events have a wrong idea; there is a rule for networking: It is not about you, it is about them.
So when talking to others you should make sure to ask the right questions, focus on getting to know them, that way you will awaken their interest in getting to know you:
1) Ask about their work: In a networking event everyone looks for connections, but not all work in the same area as you, so asking about someone else’s work can be very useful. Even if that person is not related to your area, they surely know someone who may be. In addition to that, when you ask about someone else’s work, you have the opportunity to learn interesting things. Although you are at a networking event, you can still enjoy it.
2) From these questions, you will be able to ask other questions that may well take you on the right path. The main thing is to make a good impression on the other person, if you show yourself attentive to their words, interests and of course, their work, you are on your way to success!
